We lose the Ashes!

but maintain the moral high ground.

It looked ominous
from the start. The unbroken blue skies of the preceding days had gone and in
it place a patter of rain was falling. Undeterred, a hard core team of Belfryites
sautered onto the freshly prepared pitch. The Weegies fielded first and the BEC
team (with a few co-opted bodies) managed to score something like 50 all out.
That even included a few going in for a second innings given that it was a
20-20 over match.

The balls
hurtled down the pitch and on striking the ground emerged at crazy angles. If
the quality of the bowling was poor then the batting was equally qualative.
Most of the runs were from wides. Still the Butcombe continued to flow.

The

Wessex
made a
fine start to the game and it was soon apparent that we were stuffed. It turned
out that our best bowlers were the ladies who dismissed the hard hitters with
deadly precision. We were still stuffed though and eventually conceded defeat.

Of course
if our star player wasn’t batting for the Wells 1st XI at that very
moment and if the

Wessex

hadn’t drafted in skilled* players from the other clubs we might have stood a
chance. Still the moral high ground was maintained by the BEC. Finally we adjourned
to the Upper Pitts for more liquid refreshments and a BBQ. Around 8 on the
Mellow Index.
