Ropes should be washed after being taken underground. Washing ropes after use is a condition of borrowing them from the tackle store; this should be easy because we have an amazing purpose-built rope washer at the Belfry. It's even inside so you won't get wet if it's raining (unless the rope washing all goes horribly wrong, which it probably will).

Rope Washer Instructions

  1. Make sure rope is wetted before feeding into rope washer (this saves you having to pull the rope through an extra time just to wet it!
  2. Thread rope as shown in photograph below:

  3. Close the cabinet door BEFORE turning the water on.
  4. Turn the water on.
  5. Pull rope through three times to thoroughly clean it.

The tackle store is accessible to members only by using their Belfry key fobs. A selection of ladders, ropes, tackle sacks, metalware and other items are available.

Tackle can be borrowed by members provided they:

  • Fill out a borrowing form (available from the tackle store or here),
  • Clean and return it after use (use the hosepipe outside or The Rope Washer for rope)
  • Notify the tackle master of any damage (form available from the tackle store or here)

...and follow the rest of the instructions in the Tackle FAQ (PDF).

Some items of valuable equipment (such as the surveying kits and drill) are locked in the "inner sanctum" and can only be borrowed with the assistance of a committee member. Some of these items also require a deposit in the form of a cheque.

Some caves have a wardenship system. These are the known wardens in the BEC for caves on Mendip and South Wales. Appearance on this list does not mean these people are obliged to take you on a trip, so ask nicely!
